Hero Mascot - Wetaskiwin Hospital Foundation

Hero Mascot - Wetaskiwin Hospital Foundation

Expanded Captain Care mascot pose set for the Wetaskiwin Hospital Foundation, creating a flexible character toolkit for print, web, and events.

The Wetaskiwin Hospital Foundation had an existing mascot named Captain Care, but only as a single static illustration. With a summer event coming up, they needed a way to use the character across a wider range of promotional materials. A friend working with the Foundation reached out to see if I could help expand Captain Care into something more flexible and expressive.

I proposed developing a collection of reusable poses that could work across print, web, event materials, and potentially animation in the future. The goal was to give Captain Care more personality and range while staying true to the original mascot design.

I began by bringing the existing mascot into Procreate and exploring a variety of pose ideas, from holding signs and interacting with props to larger-than-life heroic poses. The Foundation particularly liked the more energetic concepts, including lifting boulders, flying through the air, and bold action stances. I refined the selected concepts based on their feedback and additional pose requests.

Once the direction was established, I rebuilt Captain Care and the selected poses as clean, scalable vector artwork in Adobe Illustrator. The final set gave the Foundation a flexible collection of character assets that could be easily incorporated into posters, web graphics, social media, and event materials.

The project was a great example of how an existing character can be expanded into a practical visual system rather than remaining a single illustration. The finished Captain Care pose set gave the Foundation a much more versatile mascot toolkit for their promotional materials.

And yes, I still think Captain Care wants to be animated.
